Although tourism has been alive and well for 20 years or so in New Caledonia, the word is just now getting out that the tourism operators in the South and North Provinces, the three main Loyalty Islands, and the alluring Isle of Pines are welcoming gay and lesbian travellers.
One of the major resorts on the Ile des Pins is part of the Starwood group, the 5-star Le Meridien Resort. (They have a sister hotel on the mainland in the capital city, Le Meridien Noumea. The Rainbow Tourism Concierge has visited both properties and can answer questions about the guest rooms, restaurants, and activities.)
While it is possible to do a day trip and experience its highlights, a multi-day stay is advisable – so you can enjoy the nuances of the environment and the hotel amenities.
Le Meridien is nestled in a very old coconut plantation at the end of a gravel road, just 15 min. by van from the airport. Lush tropical ambience, eco-friendly, solace and pampering. Aah. But what of adventures?
A boat excursion across the turquoise lagoon is a top choice, followed by a short walk to a pristine beach where giant lobsters leap out of the water and onto a BBQ grill for devouring. A short walk from there is a natural swimming pool, where backpackers mingle with resort guests and locals alike for a snorkeler’s view of the colourful reef and uncountable number of fish, eels, and urchins.
You will feel closest to paradise on Isle of Pines, but when you return to the mainland, you will still need to pinch yourself to see if the place is real. It really is as stunning as the photos.
