Built in 1880, fully renovated in October 2010 and located in the heart of the city’s
vibrant Cuba Quarter these two self contained cottages each sleep four adults. These are heritage listed properties with modern day facilities. Located in the vibrant Cuba Quarter, just off Cuba Street they are easily accessible from the main Highway 1. Although they are located in the heart of the bustle of the Cuba Quarter, noise is not an issue as they are just a short walk from all the lively action.
The cottages were built by the Tonks family, along with other houses in the old Tonks
Grove and in 2006 the City of Wellington relocated them to the current location. According to the current owner Jeff Montgomery, “the fact that people can live in a cottage that was built by one of the early families in Wellington, well that’s all part of the magic for an international visitor”.
Gay owned and operated each cottage has a full kitchen, bathroom, queen bedroom, and lounge area. Ideal for two guests with space for an additional two people on a sofa bed and garden courtyards. Laundry facilities, parking, and wireless internet included. The beds are comfortable with hotel quality linen, commercially laundered, and the cottages are professionally cleaned after each stay. The high ceilings and clever layout give a spacious feel, and the cottages are cosy and warm, with heaters supplied if needed.
The full kitchen with dishwasher and washing machine/dryer is very convenient, although the perfect Vegan breakfast roll is but a two minute walk away at Midnight Express cafe or more traditional restaurants are close at hand. Upon check-in the owners provide a welcome basket with continental breakfast supplies which includes cereal, bread, tea, and fresh coffee.
When you are tired of small hotel rooms and want somewhere different to stay in Wellington with great restaurants and the waterfront close at hand, then the City Cottages are the place to stay!
