As you cruise up the ‘Glacier Highway’ towards the West Coast of the South Island, you will be captivated by the lush hillside overflowing with native bush such as punga and ferns that greets you. Westland is famous for its untouched beauty—most of it is reserved as a National Park—and a mixture of plentiful rainfall and sunshine keeps it fresh and green. Its natural backdrop sets the scene for your entrance into the historic gold mining town of Hokitika. Just two to three hours from Christchurch and with a gorgeous view of Mount Cook and the Southern Alps, Hokitika is the tourism capital of Westland. It is the perfect place to stay when exploring the entire West Coast, which offers a myriad of attractions from glaciers to gold mining towns, rivers, rainforest, and mountain ranges.
Founded on gold mining in 1864, Hokitika was a centre of the West Coast Gold Rush. By late 1866 it was one of the country’s most populous centres. It became the capital of the short-lived Westland Province from 1873 until the abolition of provinces in 1876. After only a 30-minute drive out of Hokitika, you will be rewarded with a fantastic journey back in time to a by-gone era of Steam Trains, Gold Panning, and Stagecoach Rides in the West Coast’s Shantytown.
Beach Walk Holiday Park is a friendly Motel and Trailer Park situated on the southern bank of the Arahura river, famed for its jade, and just north of beautiful “must see must do” Hokitika. There is a wilderness beach just 500 meters from the Park entrance gate. The Park welcomes fifth wheelers, tenters, and campers. The communal lounge and kitchen area are new and complete with all facilities including television, microwave, fridges, double oven, full disabled facilities, separate mens and ladies toilets and showers. They offer three newly built, tasteful, clean, and fully self-contained units. You can kick back and relax, as all rooms are equipped with televisions, electric blankets, and very comfortable beds for your pleasure. Each is equipped with a modern kitchen, including a microwave, hotplates and, of course, a refrigerator for keeping essential supplies cool. The Bathrooms are tiled, with powerful showers, perfect for unwinding after a hard day on the road. Modern Campervan and Tent facilities are available with powered van and tent sites plus a spacious garden area.
The powerful Grey River that flows through Greymouth offers a wealth of fishing opportunities within its rushing waters. Lake Brunner is the largest lake in the West Coast region, seven miles across at the widest point, and some twenty-two miles of shoreline. Loaded with prime brown trout, the lake and its tributaries provide superb year round fly-fishing. February and March are the best times to check out the Hokitika river, when an abundance of sea-run brown trout, perch and salmon are encountered downstream, while the upper reaches supply rainbow trout.
Hokitika is famous for its award winning restaurants, innovative cafes, talented artisans, and the infamous Wild Foods Festival. It is the only place on the West Coast where one can view live Kiwi birds, Tuatara, the only collection of truly giant freshwater eels, and many other native fish species at the world famous ‘National Kiwi Centre’ , a purpose built facility.
