The annual Hero Festival in Auckland, is the only time each year, when gay, lesbian and transgendered people can have a social and events calendar completely tailored for them, for a fortnight. The Hero Festival programme ranges from the big, mega-events like the Big Gay Out, Heroic Gardens, and the Hero Party, to the smaller events, like the the Hero Debate, movie-screenings, sports events and literary readings. Attracting around 10,000 people on average, the Big Gay Out is an event that has been refined in accordance to what its attendees want. Initially conceived as a picnic ‘family event’ with entertainment, under Eventimento, it’s current organisers, the Big Gay Out now offers everything from food to bars, trade and display tents, along with an increased programme of entertainment.
