South Australia is renowned for its wine regions and regional produce, festivals and gay pride events like Feast. South Australia’s capital city is Adelaide – an elegant, spacious city with picturesque hills 20 minutes to the east and a string of white sandy suburban beaches 20 minutes to the west.
Kangaroo Island, Australia’s third largest island and one of the world’s finest natural habitats, is a 40-minute flight or one-hour ferry trip south of Adelaide.
South Australia Hinterland
To the north is the legendary Flinders Ranges. Beyond the Flinders lies the ancient Outback with unique frontier towns like the opal-mining centre of Coober Pedy where visitors can search for their own opals.
The mighty Murray River reaches its prime in South Australia, with spectacular cliffs, abundant birds and good fishing. Eyre Peninsula offers visitors plenty of recreational fishing, shark cage diving or an awesome view of the great southern right whales frolicking in their breeding grounds at the Head of the Great Australian Bight. The South East of South Australia is home to the world heritage listed Naracoorte Cave System, a spectacular underground chamber inside an ancient marine cliff.
