Palmerston North is the major city for the Manawatu region with a thriving gay and lesbian community.
Palmerston North is a pleasant tree-lined city, the crossroads of the Manawatu, with many education and research institutions in the area, in particular Massey University. In The Square can be found the Info Centre, the Hopwood Clock Tower, gardens and fountains. The Manawatu Art Gallery, the Science Centre and Manawatu Museum are located on Main Street West.
Heading east via the Manawatu Gorge, that passes through the Ruahine Ranges, is the farming region of the Hawkes Bay and the cities of Napier and Hastings.
