The West Coast of the South Island provides some of New Zealand’s most dramatic tourism destinations.
The townships of Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier to the south provide access to glaciers while further north the townships of Greymouth and Westport showcase the wild and rugged terrain of the West Coast.
Fox Glacier is in the heart of the Westland National Park, located near the world famous Fox Glacier and the most photographed lake in New Zealand – Lake Matheson.
Besides the Glacier and Lake Matheson, Fox Glacier is also known for the various glow worm caves that surround the area.
Westport was once prosperous through gold, coal mining and timber and still operates New Zealand’s only bituminous coal mine.
Westport is also known for is adventure activities of jet boating, white and black river underground rafting, adventure caving, white water kayaking and rafting and craft. Besides adventure activites, Westport is also know for its crafts people, local west coast brewery and gold panning.
Greymouth is the major town on the West Coast, boasting a range of quality hotels, motels, backpacker hostels and holiday parks with shops from small specialty and tourist shops to national chain stores. Restaurants, cafes and bars provide a hub for entertainment.
